Proverbs 19:21
“Many are the plans of the human heart, but it is the decision of the Lord that endures.” — Proverbs 19:21
We all make plans.
We plan for our families, our work, our homes, our finances, our health, and our future. We picture how life should unfold, which doors should open, and how quickly our prayers should be answered.
Planning is not wrong. In many ways, careful planning is wise. Yet Proverbs 19:21 reminds us that our plans are never the final authority over our lives. God’s purpose is greater, His wisdom is deeper, and His decisions endure far beyond anything we can see or understand.
A Heart Full of Plans
The human heart is always imagining what might come next.
We may dream of a new beginning, hope for a certain opportunity, pray for healing, or work toward a long-awaited goal. Some plans are carefully built over many years. Others begin as a quiet hope we carry privately before God.
But even our best plans are limited by what we know today.
We cannot see every obstacle ahead. We do not know which unexpected opportunity may appear. We cannot fully understand how one delay, closed door, or change of direction may become part of something much greater.
God sees what we cannot see.
He knows the entire road while we can see only the next few steps.
When Life Takes a Different Direction
Sometimes our plans change gently. Other times, they seem to fall apart completely.
A door we expected to open remains closed. A season lasts longer than we imagined. A relationship changes. A prayer appears unanswered. A dream that once felt certain begins to look very different.
Those moments can leave us confused and disappointed.
We may wonder whether we misunderstood God, made the wrong choice, or somehow lost our way. Yet a changed plan does not mean that God has abandoned us.
It may mean He is redirecting us.
What looks like an interruption may become protection. What feels like a delay may be preparation. What appears to be an ending may become the beginning of a path we never would have chosen on our own.
God’s purpose is not fragile. It does not disappear when circumstances change.
His decision endures.
God Is Our True Compass

Faith does not mean we stop planning. It means we stop treating our plans as though they are promises God must fulfill exactly as we imagined.
We can make plans while remaining surrendered.
We can work toward goals while praying, “Lord, guide me.”
We can pursue opportunities while asking God to close doors that are not meant for us.
We can dream boldly while leaving room for His wisdom to lead us somewhere better.
Surrender is not giving up. It is trusting that God’s vision is greater than our own.
It is saying:
“Lord, these are my hopes, but I trust Your will.”
“These are my plans, but I trust Your timing.”
“This is the path I see, but I trust You to redirect me.”
His Purpose Is Steady
Our emotions change. Circumstances shift. Plans succeed, fail, grow, or fade.
But God remains steady.
His purpose is not rushed. His wisdom is not confused. His timing is not careless. Even when we cannot understand what He is doing, He is still working.
The decision of the Lord endures because God Himself is everlasting.
What He begins, He is faithful to carry forward according to His perfect wisdom.
We may not receive every answer immediately. We may not understand every turn in the road. But we can continue walking with confidence because the One guiding us already knows the destination.
A Prayer for Surrender
Lord, You know the many plans I carry in my heart.
You know my hopes, my worries, my dreams, and the future I have imagined. Help me to hold these plans with open hands.
Give me wisdom when I need to move forward, patience when I need to wait, and courage when You lead me in a different direction.
When my plans change, remind me that Your purpose has not failed. Be my compass when I feel uncertain and my peace when I cannot see the entire road.
Let Your will be done in my life, and help me trust that Your decisions are good, faithful, and everlasting.

Some may come to pass exactly as you hoped. Others may change in ways you never expected. Through every season, remember that your life is not outside God’s care.
